On Monday 22nd February, JIS held its 1st Scouts Investiture Ceremony at the JIS Sports Complex. As part of the investiture, the scouts received their 1st Jerudong Scout Group neckerchief and woggle made from bamboo, grown within the school’s campus based Outdoor Discovery Centre! At the ceremony, both students and parents attended showing support to the first JIS Scout group. Students  received the Scout Membership Award and made the Scout Promise.

The newly established Scouts Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) was set up in September 2020, for JIS student’s ages 10-14 years old. The aim of the Scouts CCA is to encourage the physical, intellectual, social and emotional development of young people so that they take a constructive place in society as responsible and resilient learners who take care of the communities they belong to. Activities are undertaken as part of the scouts such as camping, fire lighting, campfire cooking, first aid, knots and scouts can also complete badges in areas of their own interest.

“After being a Scout myself for years I was keen to get back into scouting. I want to encourage children to be resilient and strong and to care for the community that they are part of, be that local, school wide or even international. Scouting has always been a big part of my family and something that I regard highly. I am keen to provide that same sense of belonging for other children too.” (Scout Leader and JIS Teacher Mrs Victoria Moriarty)

After the investiture, the Scouts demonstrated some of their skills that they learnt by a campfire.

Principal Nicholas Sheehan has been tremendously supportive of this new activity “which will create a natural pathway into the well-established International Award Scheme (Duke of Edinburgh award) at JIS for Years 10 and above. The Scout Troop adds another opportunity for our younger students to develop and nurture their leadership skills.”
