Meaning of each Singapore school holiday 2023
22 - 23 January – Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year is the most significant celebration in China and is commemorated in countries with a large Chinese population such as Singapore. It is also known as the Spring Festival in China. Singaporeans celebrate Chinese New Year to mark a brand new year in the lunar calendar and a fresh start to life.
7 April – Good Friday
Christians and Catholics in Singapore observe Good Friday in dedicated church masses and services. Good Friday signifies the day Jesus Christ was crucified and is commemorated a few days before Easter Sunday.
2 June – Wesak Day
This day commemorates three major events in the life of Buddha: his birth, his enlightenment, and his death. Devout Buddhists in Thailand visit local temples to “make merit” on this day. They do this by giving donations and engaging in various rituals. In addition, they listen to sermons on Buddha’s teachings, meditate and offer food to temple workers.
22 April – Hari Raya Puasa
The Muslim community in Singapore celebrate Hari Raya Puasa, also known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, to commemorate the end of Ramadhan, the holy month of fasting. Hari Raya Aildilfitri celebrations typically last for one month with individuals going back to their hometowns to visit family and friends.
20 July – Hari Raya Haji
Muslims in Singapore observe this religious holiday with prayer, listening to sermons and the sacrificial ritual of ‘korban’. Hari Raya Haji commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham's) complete faith and trust in God.
9 August – National Day
Singaporeans celebrate National Day each year on 9 August to commemorate the country’s independence from Singapore in 1965.
12 August – Youth Day
Youth Day is a public holiday dedicated to the youths in Singapore and is usually celebrated on the first Sunday of July each year.
12 November – Deepavali
Deepavali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is celebrated by the Hindu community in Singapore. This celebration signifies the triumph of good over evil, purity over impurity and light over darkness. Main celebrations will take place in Singapore’s Little India district with bazaars, exhibitions and performances.

Singapore School Year Calendar and Term Dates
