There are currently over 170 international schools in Malaysia today. Each international school is unique in terms of their offerings such as the type of the curriculum followed. The British Curriculum is by far the most popular curriculum offered by international schools in Malaysia. However, it is common for international schools to offer more than one curriculum and academic qualification. For example, a school may offer the American Curriculum up until secondary school level and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at pre- university level. The range of international curricula offered in Malaysia is wide, with over ten curricula and examinations in total.

Children in Malaysia begin their education as early as at the age of four at preschools even though it is not compulsory. The Malaysian Curriculum covers a total period of six years for primary education as children reach the age of six, followed by another five years for secondary education. It aims to provide a good foundation for students to be more proficient in reading, writing and arithmetic, also known as the 3R’s.

Important facts about the Malaysian Curriculum:

• The Ministry of Education revised the primary curriculum and introduced the Primary School Standard Curriculum or KSSR in stages in 2011 and by 2016.

• After six years in the primary education, students will then sit for their final examinations, the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah or The Primary School Assessment Test, which are also known as the UPSR or PSAT.

•  The Secondary School Standard Curriculum will replace the Kurrikulum Bersepadu Sekolah Menengah (KBSM) to cater students with a comprehensive set of 21st century skills and competencies.

• Students will need to sit for a public common examination known as Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) after five years at the secondary level.
