Meaning of each holiday:
21 - 27 January – Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year is a public holiday in many countries across East Asia. Chinese Lunar Year usually takes place at sunset on the day of the second New Moon following the winter solstice, which takes place on the 21 December. The Lunar New Year can fall on any day between 21 January until 21 February.
5 April – Qingming Festival
The Qingming Festival usually takes place on either the 4th or 5th of April each year. It is known as the Tomb-Sweeping Day where people gather to pay respect to their ancestors or departed loved ones while also appreciating the spring weather.
22 - 24 June – Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the 5th day of the fifth lunar month each year. The festival is also known as the Duanwu Festival. It is a day to commemorate Qu Yuan, a Chinese poet who specialises in patriotic poems while also warding off evil spirits by practicing certain rituals. Aside from that, the dragon boat race takes place and many people attend this race. During the festival, people eat sticky rice dumplings known as Zongzi.
29 - 30 September - Mid-Autumn Festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival takes place on the 15th day of the eight lunar months each year. This festival is also called the Moon Festival or the Mooncake Festival. People decorate their houses with lanterns, gather with family and friends for dinner, watch the moon and eat mooncakes during the festival.
1 - 6 October – National Day
Also known as the Golden Week, people in China have a week of holiday in the first week of October annually. The National Day takes place to remember the People's Republic of China was founded on 1 October 1949.
China School Year Calendar and Term Dates
In China, the school term usually starts in September of each year. Then, the Winter holiday usually takes place from the end of January until early February. These dates vary depending on the date of the Lunar New Year of that particular year as it usually takes place 15 days before and after the Lunar New Year. The Summer School Holiday begins in early July and ends in late August.
