5 Schools in China Offering the British Curriculum

A wide range of subjects with include art, science and humanities are covered within the British curriculum. The curriculum is divided into Key Stages from early years until pre-university. At the end of every level, students’ academic progress is assessed. Students are also encouraged to develop skills in problem-solving and critical thinking which includes questioning and discussing a variety of topics. Although academics play a huge role in the British Curriculum, students are still able to pursue their passions and interests in extracurricular activities such as performing arts and sports as they are widely offered in schools following the British curriculum.

1. The British International School Shanghai, Puxi

Situated in the heart of a thriving expat community, The British International School Shanghai, Puxi follows the English National Curriculum. The school provides courses for students aged two to 18, where students aged 16 to 18 can take the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. The school is also recognised by the Dutch government and is affiliated with the Stichting Nederlands Onderwijs in Buitenland, hence there is a school for Dutch Language and Culture – Shanghai Dutch School.

 

 

2. The British School of Guangzhou

The British School of Guangzhou (BSG) is Guangzhou’s largest international school. Students are taught based on the English National Curriculum. The school offers programmes for children aged one up to pre-university level. Since languages at BSG are a vital part of the curriculum, all early years and primary school students learn Mandarin from day one. In Year Six, students have a choice of learning either French, German or Spanish alongside Mandarin. In addition, the school offers The Performing Arts with Juilliard programme which consists of music, dance and drama.

 

 

3. Harrow International School Beijing

At Harrow International School Beijing, a British-based international education is offered to students aged from two to 18. The school’s preschool level is divided into early years where students aged from two to five begin their learning journey. Students then move on to the pre-prep where they remain part of that phase from Year One to Year Five. Once completed, students will go into Upper School. During Year 9, all students will begin their IGCSE Science courses. In Year 10 and Year 11, students follow the GCSE, and/or IGCSE courses. The school also provides an extensive sports programme in line with the school’s tradition of providing a broad and holistic education. 

 

 

4. Shenzhen College of International Education

Established in 2003, Shenzhen College of International Education (SCIE) is an international high school accredited by the Cambridge International Examinations and College Board and has officially obtained an accreditation from the Council of International Schools (CIS). The school practices the British Curriculum teaching only IGCSE, AS and A Level courses. There are also more than 100 clubs for their extracurricular activities (ECA) which are organised by students. These activities include arts, sports, science, leadership, and living skills, among others.

 

 

5. Wellington College International Tianjin

The Wellington College International Tianjin offers education levels from Middle School to A Level. Courses for students in Grades seven through nine are based on the UK National Education Programme, and international programmes are also available for students from all over the world. The school also offers a three year full-time UK high school A Level programme for Chinese students interested in applying to overseas universities. The A Level programme is recognised internationally for its academic level and authority, and serves as a great foundation for students to prepare them for university.
