The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum focuses on the unique experiences of each child and how they can enhance their learning through positive relationships with their peers and the adults around them, as well as the enabling environments that they experience. Its primary focus is not to impart knowledge to children but to develop the characteristics of learning they require to successfully become life long, independent learners. Primarily the approach is designed for children to learn through play in the ways that interest and fascinate them, with the adults observing and interacting as appropriate to scaffold and move their learning forwards. While essentially a cross-curricular approach, our Early Years teachers will be focusing on the 7 areas of learning as covered by the EYFS: Communication and Language; Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Physical Development; Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the World; and Expressive Arts and Design.
In Reception, some key skills will be taught more directly by our teachers in Literacy and Mathematics, where the systematic teaching of Bug Club Phonics and Maths No Problem will be introduced. Furthermore, specialist teaching of PE, Swimming, Music and Mandarin will be included for all Nursery and Reception children.
