The Advanced Level, commonly known as A Level or A Levels, is a world-renowned pre-university qualification. The A Level is commonly offered by Pearson International and Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) in the Southeast Asian region. Students usually complete at least three subjects in a span of two years. The A Level is widely recognised and is a ticket to enter universities worldwide, especially in the United Kingdom.
A number of international schools that follow the British Curriculum offer the A Level in Years 12 and 13, also traditionally called Sixth Form. Students who sit for the A Level are between 16 and 19 years old and have completed their (I)GCSEs. The A Level is a natural progression for those who have a background in the British Curriculum.
Here are five international schools in Singapore that offer the A Level:
DPS International School was established in 2004 to meet the growing demand for a world-class education by the Indian expatriate community in Singapore. The school combines the best elements of Indian and western education in their curriculum. Preschool to pre-university levels are offered at the school. DPS International School mainly follows the curriculum administered by the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ICSE) and The Indian School Certificate Examination (ISC). In 2009, the school officially began to offer the IGCSE qualification. In Grade 7, students can decide if they want to sit for the IGCSE or ICSE examinations. In Grade 12, students can also opt to sit for the A Level or ISC examinations. The school places an emphasis on social work and community service in addition to academics.
Furen International School originally opened as a Preparatory School in 2000 that prepared students to sit for the Singapore O Level examination. Currently, the school offers both secondary and pre-university levels. Other than O Level preparation, Furen International School offers the Cambridge Lower Secondary Curriculum and A Level qualifications. The school also provides Certificate in English, Diploma in International Education and preparation for the IELTS and SATs. Students also participate in a variety of social causes and programmes for an enriching school experience.
Insworld School opened in 2000 for enrolment. In 2020, the school officially changed its name to Insworld Institute. The school caters to students aged 11 to 18 years old. Insworld’s flexible curriculum means students can sit for the Edexcel International Tuition Programme (EITP), IGCSE or A Level courses depending on prior academic qualifications and English language proficiency. The school also provides the English for Academic Study programme to help students meet the necessary English language requirements to join any Insworld programmes. Students also have the opportunity to join a number of outreach activities and leadership camps at the school.
SIM International Academy caters to students aged 12 to 18 years old. Students are prepared to sit the for the IGCSE and A Level examinations under the Cambridge Assessment International Education. The school’s curriculum also focuses on Social Sciences and applied learning in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The education experience at SIM International Academy is enriched with co-curricular activities, service-learning and a boarding programme. The school’s boarding house is managed by houseparents who are responsible for students’ welfare and needs. Boarding students are also provided with academic support programmes.
In 1925, Anne Griffith-Jones OBE founded Tanglin School, providing a British education to expatriate children. The school was officially renamed Tanglin Trust School in 1996 and is known for providing a flexible British-based curriculum. Preschool to pre-university levels are offered at the school, namely Infant School, Junior School, Senior School and Sixth Form. Students are prepared to sit for the IGCSE examinations during the Senior School level. Tanglin Trust School is the only school in Singapore to offer both the IB Diploma Programme and A Level qualifications during Sixth Form. This gives students an opportunity to choose the best pre-university pathway for them. In addition, the school has a vibrant and thriving Arts programme which is a big part of the school’s curriculum and student life.
