Vietnam’s economy has thrived in recent years leading to a rise in expatriates, foreign investments and a growing middle-class population. These factors have also led to a growing number of international schools in Vietnam. According to ISC Research, there are 119 international schools and preschools in Vietnam. Most of the international schools are concentrated in expat-friendly cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Hoi An and Da Nang.
In 2018, the Vietnamese government introduced Decree 86 to develop the private education sector and regulate foreign investments. A highlight of this new decree is the quota increase of the enrolment of local children in international schools to 50%. This quota revision has increased the demand for international education in Vietnam and has transformed the country into a market for opening new international schools.
Here are a few international schools located in Hanoi:
1. Brendon International Primary School
The school was established in 2011 and offers the British Curriculum. It is the first school in Hanoi to provide a primary education based on the British Curriculum in Hanoi. Students are taught a combination of basic subjects in Vietnam’s national curriculum and subjects based on the British Curriculum. The school adopts a bilingual medium of instruction of English and Vietnamese for their classes. In addition, the school offers a STEM programme in accordance with the American National Standards NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards).

2. British International School Hanoi
The school opened its doors in August 2012 to students aged two to 18 years old. The British Early Years Foundation Stage and International Primary Curriculum is offered during early years and primary levels. Students sit for the IGCSE examinations at the end of secondary school and the IB Diploma Programme is offered at pre-university level. The medium of instruction is English but Vietnamese, French, Spanish and German are offered as well. Performing arts is also encouraged as the school has a collaboration with the Julliard School to deliver top-notch performing arts programmes to its students.
3. Concordia International School
Founded in 2011, Concordia International School first offered preschool to Grade 7 levels. A higher grade level was added annually after that. It has sister schools in Shanghai and Hong Kong. The school offers the American Curriculum from preschool through Grade 12. Additional English language support is offered to students who need it. In addition, Mandarin and Spanish are offered as foreign language options in Grade 3 and Grade 6 respectively.
The school was established in 1996 and offers the International Baccalaureate PYP, MYP and DP. Hanoi International School’s enrolment grew steadily and moved to its current location in 1999. The school has a learning support department that helps students with special educational needs. One on one support, small group support, in-class support and private tutoring are offered. In addition, the school provides private counselling sessions to students who are going through a difficult time at school. Hanoi International School also places an importance on performing arts with activities such as band academy and drama productions.
5. TH School
TH school focuses on college preparatory education for national and international students from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12. The school has two campuses: Chua Boc, a day school for students in Kindergarten to Grade 12; and Hua Loc, a day and boarding school for students in Grade 6 to Grade 12. TH School is authorised by the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) to offer a unique curriculum that blends an English language medium education with elements of Vietnamese language, literature, history and civics. The International Primary Years Curriculum, International Middle Years Curriculum, IGCSE and A Levels are offered at the school.
6. United Nations International School Hanoi
United Nations International School Hanoi was established in 1988 and is known for being the first international school to open in Vietnam. It is also one of the two international schools in the world under the United Nations that aim to educate agents for change. The school offers the International Baccalaureate PYP, MYP and DP. English as an Additional Language (EAL) support is also provided.
