Brunei is the second smallest country in Southeast Asia. It is bordered by the Malaysian state of Sarawak. Despite its small size, Brunei is known for being the fifth wealthiest country in the world due to its booming oil and gas industry.

The country’s high standard of living, tax-free income and free healthcare have attracted expatriates to relocate to Brunei for work opportunities. The number of international schools in the country has grown due to the demand from expatriate parents for international education.

1. The number of private and internationals schools in Brunei


There are over 20 private and international schools in Brunei. According to research by the International School Consultancy (ISC), there is approximately 6,500 students enrolled in Bruneian international schools. Children of both locals and expatriates are allowed to study at international schools. In addition, there are a number of private schools which offer English-medium education in Brunei.

 


2. The British Curriculum is popular


Majority of international schools in Brunei offer the National Curriculum of England, also known as the British Curriculum. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Curriculum and International Primary Curriculum (IPC) are also offered by Bruneian international schools. There are a handful of international schools in Brunei which have boarding facilities as well.

 


3. Examinations offered by private and international schools in Brunei


Many private schools in Brunei offer the Brunei-Cambridge O Level examinations at the end of secondary school. Students in lower secondary school sit for the Student Progress Examination (SPE) which consists of the Student Progress Assessment (SPA) and School Based Assessment (SBA). The IGCSE examination is also commonly offered by schools that adopt the British Curriculum. In addition, there is a number of sixth form centres in Brunei which offer the A Level examination.
