About Straits International School Penang

Located in Bayan Lepas, Penang, our campus is made up of three connected schools which offer a rich and broad British curriculum for ages 3 till 16 years.

Straits International School Penang has a dynamic approach to learning and school life, founded on high-quality pastoral care, two-way communication with parents, and a commitment to provide value-added programmes, along with all the academic support our students need to grow healthily in all spheres.

We have high standards of English, with all English lessons taught by native speakers or expat staff, which we find contributes significantly to children's mastery of the language. We also place great importance on Mandarin, with students having the option to learn Mandarin every day. We proudly honour and celebrate Malaysian culture and traditions, with Malaysian citizens required to study the official national language, Bahasa Melayu, and foreign students able to study Malay as a second language.

The school was acquired by the International Schools Partnership (ISP) in October 2021. ISP is a growing and globally-recognised group of 60 international schools located in 17 countries all over the world, and committed to a learning-first culture of 'getting better'.

Straits International School Penang’s dazzling kindergarten, Star Kids, develops children’s curiosity about the world around them while establishing their academic and social skills under the care of our specialist teachers.

Our experienced teaching team follows the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFS), which is part of the English National Curriculum. The EYFS is designed to tap into children's natural curiosity and uses play-based approaches to help our youngest stars grow into resilient, capable, confident and self-assured individuals.

We understand that every child is unique and can become a strong and independent learner. That is why our caring and dedicated teachers carefully observe each child to ensure they are engaged in class and are ready to respond to their individual needs. We also have strong partnerships between teachers and parents so that we can establish the best way to support your child's growth.

Classes are taught in English and there’s an emphasis on language with Cambridge English for Young Learners, Bahasa Melayu and Mandarin so that they become confident multi-lingual speakers Children learn basic numeracy skills and by the end of EYFS will be able to perform simple addition and subtraction problems. We develop reading and writing through a series of progressive activities, including stroke making, learning the alphabet and phonics work.

Our curious stars explore and experiment with Art, Music and we look at the wider world and try to understand how and why things happen.

Children are assessed using the EYFS Profile which documents a child’s progress over their two years from Nursery, aged 3 to the end of Reception, aged 5. The profile contains a variety of evidence and teacher reflection and comment highlighting areas where children are doing well and where help is still required.

We welcome all prospective EYFS children to come and join the school for a few days and enjoy learning with our current children.
