Ellis Turton (from the UK) the Sixth Form Captain achieved an outstanding International Baccalaureate Score of 44 points in the May 2019 examinations. This has earned her a place at Homerton College in the University of Cambridge in October 2019 to study Education, Policy and International Development. Ellis is the latest in a line of JIS alumni to enter the University of Cambridge following in the steps of Haeram Jalees (currently at Kings College studying Law), Bruneian Jasmine Thien (currently at Homerton College studying Education, English and Drama) and James Dickinson (graduated in Philosophy from Downing College in June 2019).
The School’s IB results continue to be outstanding, with 35% of the students achieving 40 points or more (from a maximum possible 45 points). The challenging IB Diploma had an average Diploma score worldwide of 30; 96% of the JIS graduating IB Diploma students exceeded this global average score. This was a really superb achievement! In May 2019, 166,278 students from 144 countries and 2926 schools sat for the IB Diploma examinations.
The graduating students at Jerudong International School are heading to a diverse range of courses and Universities. Australian, Hannah Bourbon, Deputy Head Girl achieved an excellent 42 points. Hannah will be heading to Monash University in Melbourne to study for a Double Degree Bachelor of Arts and Science in February 2020.
Malaysian, Paveen Phon-Amnuaisuk and British student, Ben Mitchell both achieved 41 points. Paveen will also head to Monash University to study Psychology. Ben will enter the University of Sussex to study International Relations.
Five students achieved 40 points. Bruneian, Nazurah Hapiz plans to go to the London School of Economics and Political Science to study for a BSc in International Relations whilst fellow Bruneian Alvin Hendricks will head to Canada to study a BASc in Engineering (Minoring in Commerce) at the University of British Columbia. Malaysians, Ben Loh and Kai Jie Hii will head to Australia for their University studies. Ben to study Medicine at the University of New South Wales and Kai Jie to study animation or game design in Melbourne. Sophie Granville, from the UK, will head to Durham University to study Geography.
Rayyan Zuberi will be heading to the University of Calgary to study Biomedical Sciences having achieved 39 points in his IB Diploma. Other Bruneian students who achieved outstanding IB scores are Wana Saiful Rizal (38 points) who plans to study Urban Planning at the University of Toronto whilst Bazli Tarip is going to have a gap year to plan where he will use his IB Diploma of 37 points.
In addition to the truly excellent results achieved by these students, what should be noted and commended is the way all the IB students have participated and made a difference in all areas of school life. They fully embraced Jerudong International School's vision of achieving excellence in holistic education.
Mr Nicholas Sheehan, Principal of JIS said that "whilst these top performing students will leave JIS with superb academic results, they will be remembered more by their fellow students for the significant impact as young leaders in the school and the influence they have had on those around them. They have set an excellent example to the younger members of our community. These success stories would not have been written without their parent’s support and also that of the academic team in the Upper Years - Mr Tony Piper (Head of Senior School and JIS Vice Principal) and Dr Colin Dickinson (IB Coordinator) together with the teaching staff continue to encourage and inspire students to become the best that they can be. Our colleague, Mr Russell Mann (Dean of Higher Education) who sadly passed away in March, also played a key role in assisting with their University applications.
The International Baccalaureate is offered at JIS as one of the pre-university options for 16-18 year olds and is the world's fastest growing international qualification. To complete this challenging qualification, students study six subjects – three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level including English, Maths, a Language, a Humanities subject, a Science subject plus a final creative or elective subject choice. In addition, they complete a challenging 4000-word piece of research, a mini thesis, as well as completing Theory of Knowledge (ToK), a critical thinking skills course as well as a compulsory Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) component which takes place throughout the two years.
