Dhanushan Chinniah, Year 8 student from Jerudong International School recently won first prize from more than 360 entries in the annual COBIS Poetry Competition in Category B (open for students ages 11 to 14 years). COBIS is the Council of British International Schools - a global organisation of more than 450 schools and organisations in 80 countries.
Working together with Pobble, a company to promote writing skills, the COBIS Poetry Competition was open to all COBIS schools around the world with this year’s theme ‘Connections’. Judges of the COBIS Poetry Competition included teachers from COBIS Schools, experts from COBIS Supporting Associates and professionals from the writing industry.
The judges feedback on Dhanushan’s poem was:
“The jeremiad is very thoughtful. Although the tone and message is very pessimistic, there is a powerful voice. Some very thoughtful similes here too. Excellent.”
“An extremely powerful and thought-provoking poem.”
Dhanushan’s English Teacher, Mrs Georgina Windsor has been an inspiration to Dhanushan. A former BBC journalist, she explained her reasons for encouraging students to participate in this competition: “ I am passionate about our students embracing and exploring their creativity. My hope is for them to find joy in how they use language to create powerful images and emotions; to share their voice as global citizens and help them see the power of their own writing. “
Nicholas Sheehan, JIS Principal commented, ‘Dhanushan is a student who always gets involved in activities in school. We are delighted to hear of this award and offer our sincerest congratulations to him!’
Dhanushan’s parents were ‘elated’ to hear of this award for which he will receive a GBP75 Amazon voucher!
The annual COBIS Poetry Competition received more than 360 entries from students in 88 schools worldwide. Winners of the competition are awarded a certificate and an Amazon voucher for each winner and runner-up of each category.
